Photo Ownership & Reproduction Rights FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions: Ownership & Reproduction Rights

1. What do I actually own when I purchase a photograph?

When you purchase a physical photograph from Hollywood's Collection, you own the physical item — the print, paper, or card itself. Ownership of the physical photograph does not transfer any copyright, reproduction rights, or intellectual property rights related to the image depicted.

2. Can I make copies of my purchased photograph?

No. Purchasing a physical photograph does not grant you the right to reproduce, duplicate, scan, photocopy, or create copies of the image in any format — digital or physical — without explicit written permission from the copyright holder.

3. Can I use the image for commercial purposes?

Purchasing a photograph does not include commercial-use rights. You may not use the image in advertising, merchandise, resale, or any revenue-generating activity without a separate license from the rights holder.

4. Can I post the image online or share it on social media?

Personal, non-commercial sharing (such as showing your collection to friends) may be permissible, but publicly posting, uploading, or distributing reproductions of the image — including on social media — may infringe on copyright. We recommend consulting a legal professional if you are unsure.

5. Is the image in the public domain?

Hollywood's Collection does not represent or guarantee that any photograph is in the public domain unless explicitly stated in the individual product listing. Public domain status varies by jurisdiction, publication date, and other legal factors. Do not assume an image is public domain based solely on its age or subject matter.

6. Who holds the copyright to the images?

Copyright is typically held by the original photographer, studio, or their legal successors — not by Hollywood's Collection or by the buyer. Hollywood's Collection sells the physical item only and makes no claim of copyright ownership unless explicitly stated.

7. What if I want to license the image for reproduction or commercial use?

You would need to independently identify and contact the current copyright holder to negotiate a license. Hollywood's Collection is not able to grant reproduction or licensing rights on behalf of third-party rights holders.

8. Do these rules apply to vintage and publicity photographs alike?

Yes. Whether the photograph is a vintage print, a studio publicity still, a press photo, or a modern reprint, the same principles apply: purchasing the physical item does not transfer reproduction rights or copyright.

9. I have more specific questions about my rights — can you help?

We can answer general questions about what is included with your purchase, but we are not able to provide legal advice. For jurisdiction-specific questions about copyright, reproduction, or commercial use, please consult a qualified intellectual property attorney.
